This two-year exploratory study sought to understand the obesity-related influences for Pacific Islander youth in Southern California.  Using a community-based participatory research approach involving four community-based agencies and three universities, the goals of this project were to: (1) test the feasibility of quantitative and qualitative data collection activities among Marashallese, Samoan and Tongan adolescents; (2) estimate the point prevalence of obesity and physical activity, with a sub-goal to explore the distribution of dietary intake in these groups; and (3) explore the predisposing, enabling and reinforcing factors influencing physical activity in this group.

PACE for Moms is a randomized controlled trial designed to decrease the BMI in 156 mild to moderately overweight postpartum women (ages 18-45), who are at least 6 weeks post-delivery, by the end of a 16-week online intervention.  Weight loss is promoted by disseminating physical activity and nutrition information tailored to postpartum women, with weekly goals, weekly evaluations, and related education materials, via a dedicated website designed for this intervention.

This Small Business Innovation Research grant project, funded by the NCI, developed a prototype of a portable energy balance assessment and intervention tool supported through data capture and feedback in real time. It is being built around a cell phone client and a web-based server architecture. Software was designed to be adaptable to the specific needs of two groups of researchers: 1) those engaged in individual-level cognitive and behavioral intervention research; and 2) researchers involved in active living and food environment research.

Santech is currently initiating usability, acceptability, reliability, and validity testing of the tool, as well as ongoing expansion of eBalance features and devices. In its final form, the tool will support self-report and objective measurement of individual-level energy balance data (e.g., physical activity, heart rate, sedentary behavior, dietary intake, and psychosocial data). It will also support the capture and use of environment-based data, in this case global positioning system (GPS) data that can be matched to geographical information system (GIS) data for purposes of environmental tracking and prompting. Subsequent versions of this system are envisioned to be capable of collecting environmental data through such technologies as bar codes, RFID, or other technologies. Once its utility has been adequately empirically demonstrated, the e/Balance tool will be available to researchers on a licensing basis, with Santech offering optional tailoring to the researcher’s specific needs. In the meantime, inquiries from energy balance researchers or consumers interested in pilot testing the tool are welcomed.

This study aims to adapt a cognitive/behaviorally-based, 24-week, lifestyle physical activity intervention, Physically Ready for Invigorating Movement Everyday (PRIME), for 86 sedentary adults with schizophrenia (aged 18-64 years), living in board and care facilities.  The primary outcome will be the effect of the intervention on physical activity at 2, 6 and 8 months.  Secondary outcomes will assess intervention effects on quality of life, body mass index, and blood pressure.  Exploratory analysis will be conducted to begin to identify mediators and moderators of increased physical activity.

The current proposal incorporates multidimensional outcome measures identified by the VHA National Pain Management Strategy in assessing the effects of a promising new chronic pain intervention on veterans with chronic pain.  The overarching objective is to asses the effects of the acceptance-based therapy model on the primary outcome of pain interference and secondary outcomes of quality of life, physical activity, emotional distress, pain intensity, and treatment satisfaction among 94 veterans with chronic benign pain as a secondary condition.  The primary aim of this study is to gain supporting evidence for more widespread adoption of this model across VA rehabilitation centers.

Description:

This is a single-blind, 8-week, randomized clinical trial comparing in-person acceptance-based individual treatment to telehealth acceptance-based individual treatment for chronic pain.

Requirements of participants:

  1.      Must have suffered from chronic pain for at least 6 months
    b.      Be able to read, write, and speak English, complete 4 assessments, and attend 8 weekly individual treatment sessions

Benefits to subjects, compensations, etc:

  1.      Eight weekly individual behavioral treatment sessions of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for chronic pain at no cost
    b.      A possible total of $150 compensation

All treatments for pain, mood, and sleep must be stable for at least one month (e.g., adding a pain med, changing dose, starting acupuncture, discontinuing physical therapy or antidepressant, etc.) prior to screening assessment

This study seeks to investigate the relationship between active lifestyles, genotypic risk, brain structure and cognitive function in normally aging older adults.  The results of this study will advance our knowledge about possible environmental effects that serve a protective function against expression of dementia and whether this protective effect is manifested in humans in preservation of temporal lobe integrity.  Additionally, results will provide novel information about possible additive effects of genetic risk for dementia on brain structure and function, and the potential for activity levels to modify this risk.

The study is designed to integrate advanced communications technologies in the ongoing care of older patients with chronic mental illness. The overall goal is to provide an instrument that helps increase treatment compliance and participation, while reducing hospitalization and provider burden. Collaborating with San Diego County Assertive Community Treatment Teams, we have constructed a cellular phone text messaging assessment and intervention strategy that assists in the ongoing monitoring of patient mood and functional symptoms in addition to offering brief interactive cognitive-behavioral interventions for auditory hallucinations and medication compliance. Patients are provided with cellular phones and are asked to respond to text message prompts multiple times a day for 3 months. The messages ask patients to rate their current state on multiple dimensions. Based on their response, the systems server sends a series of short cognitive-behavioral interventions and “health tips” tailored to help reduce symptom distress and improve functioning. The system also allows for an “emergency option” in which patients that report high levels of distress are provided with contact information and behavioral instructions for how to seek assistance.
