UCSD School of Bone Densitometry

EPARC hosts the UCSD School of Bone Densitometry, which offers high quality training for individuals who would like to become certified as Limited X-Ray Technicians using Dual X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA) in the state of California.

DXA is a gold standard tool for assessing bone density and body composition, and is widely used in both clinical and research environments.  Specifically, DXA is used clinically to diagnose osteoporosis and to track patient’s response to various pharmacological and behavioral interventions. DXA is also being increasingly used in the research setting, and the new school will have a particular emphasis on how DXA can be leveraged to promote public health.

The UCSD School of Bone Densitometry will hold monthly classes over a long weekend (Fri through Sun). These classes will be a blend of traditional didactic “in-person” instruction, interactive online learning, and direct experiential training.  In this 3 and a half day course, students will receive all of the training necessary to sit for (and pass) the state exam.

Jeanne Nichols, Ph.D., the school’s program director, and David Wing, M.S., the school’s clinical coordinator, have more than 30 combined years of DXA experience, and will lead the instruction team. Additionally, subject experts in radiology, pharmacology, nutrition, and other related areas will provide didactic instruction.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have the opportunity to educate the next generation of technicians on how to acquire high quality scans while also helping medical and academic professionals understand the myriad potential uses of DXA in both research and the clinic” says David Wing.
